LUMBUNG GALLERY IS A COOPERATIVE EXPERIMENT IN CO-OWNERSHIP, EXCHANGE, AND TRANSVESTMENT AT DOCUMENTA FIFTEEN.
Rooted in principles such as collectivity, communal sharing, and equal allocation of returns and resources, Lumbung represents an artistic and economic model focused on sustaining a continued collective practice rather than producing collectible art objects. Shared funds, non-monetary exchange and new models of ownership and trade are at the center of Lumbung Gallery, a collective of collectives at documenta fifteen using the parameters of the existing art ecomony to «transvest» resouces towards a more commons based exchange. Guided by the practice and values of Lumbung, the gallery space during documenta is documenta itself.
The plattform TheArtists supports the Lumbung Gallery workgroup in developing and managing their activity. As a not-for-profit endeavour, TheArtists supports artists without gallery representation by exhibiting their work, giving legal advice and selling works while maintaining transparency. With a focus on providing free access to knowledge and sharing proceeds between all participants, TheArtists shares the core values of Lumbung.
Lumbung Gallery is planned to extend beyond the duration of documenta fifteen as a registered entity of its own. Collectors, public institutions and communities are invited to form their own Lumbungs and participate in the sharing of artworks.
